It's Fall Bar Cart Season

Hello all! Tomorrow officially kicks off my favorite month, October! I'm not just saying that because it's my birthday month. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, I love all things spooky! We will see how well this theory holds during my visit to Halloween Horror Nights this weekend in Orlando (bets on if I keep my eyes open in any of the houses?). It also unofficially kicks off the holiday season in my book. There's just something special about October. As much as I loved my bright pink flamingos and pink motif I had previously going on with my bar cart, I knew it was time to switch for fall.

Bar carts are perfect for adding a touch of sophistication to your home and they come in all sizes and price ranges. Anyone can have a bar cart even if they don't physically have the cart. You can just as easily have a bar area set up on a table or a certain section in your kitchen, dining room areas work well also. Having your bar area on a table is a great way to incorporate this idea into your home, especially ideal if you live in an apartment. All you really need is a chic tray. Updating your bar cart and/or tray is super easy for the changing seasons.

I start off with the surrounding area where I keep my cart. Put a few pictures above the cart area if you please. They can be changed from season to season or can be left year round. The components of the bar area stay relatively the same just with a few updates. For instance, instead of lemons and limes in a small vase for summer just replace those with some fall looking pinecones which can also work for winter (I plan on changing the bar cart to a hot chocolate cart in Dec!). I just picked up a few fake mini-pinecones in a bag via Hobby Lobby. I also got the small vase and two of the pictures. Hobby Lobby is awesome to find details for your cart. Make sure you check or ask for the 40% off coupon that is usually available each week. You can often find it online!

The other items were found at Target and just things I had from previous seasons. You can check the bottom to see where I purchased most of the items and please let me know if you have any questions on decorating your cart or anything else you see here. I love hearing from you all!

Go get started on your cart now!

Happy Last Day of September!

xoxo,

Kitchen and Mud Room DIY on a Budget

Hey guys! I'm here for your next home decorating post, today we are tacking the kitchen and mud room. When I bought my house these were two areas that I knew needed improvement. The look the previous owner had for the kitchen was a bit of a Paris-café look and while it wasn't bad it just wasn't my style. The mud room was essentially just a washer and drier with no decorating whatsoever.

I knew the kitchen definitely needed a few necessary cosmetic changes but I also knew what to spend money on and what could be done on the less-expensive side. A lot could be accomplished just by painting the walls and adding a few of my own touches. Check out the before and after pics and my tips along the way!

Kitchen Before:

Mud Room Before:

Kitchen After:

The kitchen looks completely different. As you can see the space looks much larger and open than before. The red color seemed to close the room off and the soft yellow makes the areas seem more fresh and not as restricted. Great hues for kitchens, especially in smaller homes, are light yellow, baby blue, lilac, ivory, and salmon. I hated the checkerboard tile at first with all the red and black but after the yellow paint, it gave off a more cottage vibe which is the look I was going for.

A BIG improvement was the countertops, granite automatically makes a kitchen look better. If you see in the before pictures, the counters were straight black, non-granite tops. I chose a light grey granite with brown flecks to continue making the room lighter thus making it appear bigger. Another suggestion, if granite is out your budget, look into laminate that mirrors the granite look. Check out your local Lowe's or Home Depot and they have TONS of options and samples.

I did and still do a lot of shopping at Hobby Lobby to find little trinkets or items to place around my home. On Instagram a few weeks back, I took a picture of this adorable cow print and knew it would look great in my kitchen. As I stated in my last home decorating post I think you should have one nice piece of art in your house. I have a beautiful painting in my living room that I bought at a local art gallery. I saved money on other pieces for the rest of the house by utilizing Hobby Lobby, Shoptiques and online specialty stores such as Etsy.

I also took off the shelves on the side and just placed one shelf in the corner with a cookie jar I found at Target and a few other little trinkets.

Below the shelf, I put a few more little decorations including this cute plate representing my hometown from Swoozies which also has really fun home goods and knick-knacks.

On the sides closest to one of the doors I placed some faux chili peppers (Hobby Lobby) to add a bit of color and a little kitchen flair. Ok, I am not a huge fan of the signs with sayings but I needed something to cover the phone wiring and these were gifts so it was a win/win. In a lot of older homes, the wiring for lots of devices are visible, just stick a picture like the one below up to cover the problem area.

I LOVE coffee mugs even if I rarely drink coffee now, I still use the mugs. I have mugs from different travels and special meanings so I like to showcase them. A thing I decided to do after seeing it done on Property Brothers, was take off one of the cabinet doors to allow the mugs to be visible. I like the look it creates and adds another splash of decoration.

Closer look at the removed cabinet door!

Another thing that can easily transform a kitchen or bathroom vanity area is a back splash. I loved this light grey, almost brick look that went along with the cottage vibe. Again, check out your local hardware stores such as Lowe's, they have back splashes for every budget and plenty of options! Just add a few pieces that make the space seem not so bare. But don't go overboard, you don't want the area to become so cluttered.

One of the bigger purchases was stainless steel appliances. They had sets on sale at Home Depot so I would definitely check out sets as an option. I love the way it makes the kitchen look, the other appliances were so old that it automatically dated the area. Spend money on larger and items you will use frequently and that will provide a much needed update.

Again, look at removing cabinets to open more space and make items that add a unique twist to your home. It is super easy to remove most cabinets so it's an easy fix! I have had the flying pig (pictured below) since college and I love that he was able to be showcased. I also have wine glasses from several of my running adventures present.

Mud Room After:

As stated before the mudroom was essentially just a washer and drier before I moved in. I wanted to make it more. I moved the washer and drier to a different area in the house which was smaller and the sole purpose was laundry. That meant I could play around with the mud room. I bought a small table and bench set from Kmart...yes, see you can find cute things everywhere and on a budget! You have to look though. Added pillows and a rug from the ultimate shopping paradise, Target. When there is doubt go to Target, they have wonderful home items which are good quality and good for your budget. I found the whale at a local store and utilized a simple tray which I found at Target as well. Trays are a good piece if you want to add a little décor to an otherwise blank area.

My mom found this adorable "head" at Hobby Lobby and I love the way it adds color and personality to the room!

I am a huge football fan so I had two copies of the Sports Illustrated when my college team went to the National Championship in 2010 and 2013. I found them when I was moving out of my apartment in college and decided to put them in a shadow box (found at Hobby Lobby) along with a shaker to add some team flair. You can do this with anything that might be special to you, doesn't have to be sports or even a magazine.

Record players are also super in now and I found this fun pink one on the Barnes and Noble website. Crosby are good players and come in lots of colors and sizes. They also have a few that are used but say in very good condition and normally under $100, so be sure to search "Crosby" on the site and see what comes up! You can buy new records but I found most of mine at local thrift stores, you can get records for under $10 at some local places. It adds a bit of a vintage touch but aren't paying crazy prices.

I added this "Coast to Coast" hanger to place some of my running medals, be proud of your accomplishments! The screen divider serves as decoration but also a fashionable way of covering up the pipes and more wiring. This divider was also purchased at Hobby Lobby!

Add a few flowers in pretty vase plus a few other personal touches and the mud room was complete! Again, with just some minor changes, you can completely transform an area of your house. YOU can do it! I can't tell you how many people I know who spent thousands of dollars on home decorators and the style is nothing personal. It looks like everyone else's house. Get out there and find the things YOU love!

I will be showcasing my office and spare bedroom on the next home decorating post so stay tuned! Please let me know if you have any questions. I hope you enjoyed this post and got some ideas and inspiration!

Happy Decorating!

Living Room DIY and on a Budget

Hey all! I am pumped to start showing you guys my DIY and home decorating posts. I have been a homeowner for about a year now and I can' tell you how happy this home has made me. In college, I stayed in my sorority dorm for a year then moved into a town house type apartment. Decorating an apartment is fun and I think I made it feel quite "homey". When I was house hunting I knew I wanted a cottage style look and after much (much!) searching I found the perfect fit. My house is not super big but I have created ways to make it appear bigger and get the most out of the space I do have. I've also learned a few tips on decorating with a 20 something's budget so I am happy to share. Let's get started!

The living room was an essential room for me, I love having friends over and entertaining (I know that's the term they use on all the HGTV shows) so I wanted a big focus on this space. For starters, the paint color had to go. It was a dullish beige and as you may know, darker colors make areas look smaller. I chose a sunny yellow hue for the inside which instantly brightened the space and made it look more roomy. As stated before, I love the cottage style look you see in Southern Living but I wanted my own twist. I did not want the same pieces everyone else has in their house. You may be skeptical but antique shops are the best option for this. My mom and I would go out early (go with someone who legit wants to do this or else the experience will be miserable. Parents and besties are usually good options) on Saturday mornings and search for new treasures.

We discovered this amazing resale/antique shop, Encore Resales. They have new items but are mostly old items that have been refurnished or upholstered.  I got some really cool pieces for great prices and one of my favorites is the table pictured below. The railroad cart inspired table was a great find and good on my budget, around $200 for a standout piece. Here is a similar option (under $330).  I like to place a few books and magazines for decoration. I love heavier coffee table books like this one (under $35) and I own this book (on sale! Under $30). Look around antique and thrift stores for unique coffee table books. Pick something that stands out to you or is a conversation starter. I added a turquoise and white rug for a pop of color (I love this rug but beware that white can be hard to keep clean). During the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, I couldn't resist this Zebra Stripe Rug. It is no longer on sale but you can still purchase it, I think it adds a little detail and character to the room. If you want a touch of Zebra but not the Nordstrom price, this similar style rug is a great choice and under $30!

I don't really do much shopping at places like Pier 1 or Pottery Barn because I find them to be quite expensive. However they are worth a look if there is a sale which is how I cam across the comfiest chair alive. This pale blue and white striped chair caught my eye and was surprised to see it on sale. It's reason? It was missing a small button. Yes, a small button meant the chair was on sale. I snatched it up and they gave me the extra button if I wanted to sew it on. Look for deals like this, if something has a minor problem that can be fixed then go ahead and take the sale! Lucky for y'all there is a sale over at Pier 1 and lots of chairs are reduced for Labor Day so take a peek here for the deals!

Also, don't be afraid to mix prints. I wasn't sure about this faux cow print ottoman (found at Encore but I love this similar style) but I think it adds a little more charm to the room.

Chances are if you have your own place you are an adult so that means no more Animal House posters as wall décor. I think you should have at least one piece of nice art in your home. I went to a local gallery and purchased the painting below. It was under $200 and I know it isn't a Picasso or anything like that but I love it. Check out your local art galleries so you can find a special piece for your home.

If galleries just aren't your thing or in in your budget, I am obsessed with Hobby Lobby! This place seriously has it all for home decorating. They usually have a 40% off coupon so check the website and in store.

My couch and love seat were purchased at Encore in the new furniture department of the store. I would also recommend places such as Ashley Furniture for lots of couch options (they are having a Labor Day sale now!). I also love throw pillows and yes, I know they have no purpose! Target is a great place to pick up pillows and I picked up this fun Zebra Pillow during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (I see a trend here...). Pillows can be a good way to add some color to a plain couch or to add a special touch to a look.

One of the many things I loved about this house was the huge bookcases in the living room. I'm still working on filling them but as of now each little level has a theme. You can find cute little knick knacks anywhere from Target to local boutiques. The English major in me loves books so I enjoy filling the shelves with vintage ones and my favorites. If you are looking for old books, hit your antique and thrift shops plus I really like 2nd and Charles and I found some great first edition and older books at excellent prices on Etsy (just type in what you are looking for in the search engine)!

There you have my living room! I have known several people who have hired decorators and spent LOTS of money and the things that are picked out aren't even their style. You don't have to spend a ton of money to get a great looking room. Utilize antique shops, look at local stores, and don't be afraid of buying something old and transforming it. I have an upholstering post coming soon as well as office, kitchen and bedroom decorating tips/posts already in production.

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions, I love hearing from you guys!

Happy Decorating!

XOXO,

Bar Cart Beauties

Hello lovelies! I hope everyone's Hump Day is going well and if it isn't...we are almost to the weekend! Weekends just call for celebrations and sometimes you want to have a little get together at your place before heading out on the town or maybe you want to have the crew over to have a few drinks and try to figure out what is going on in True Detective season 2. A bar cart is the perfect home accessory and another way to add your own twist to something unique. I started seeing bar carts in homes while I was house hunting last year. They are so stylish and elegant, it makes me think of some 1930's Hollywood glamour days. They also have a wide variety of looks to choose from depending on what can fit your home. I found mine recently on sale at Target so you don't have to buy one that's super expensive.
